The 8Y — Audi's Current-Gen S3 on MQB EVO
The Audi S3 8Y launched in Australia for the 2021 model year, replacing the long-running 8V chassis. Built on the MQB EVO platform — shared with the Volkswagen Golf R MK8, GTI MK8, and the Tiguan R — the 8Y uses the EA888 Gen 4 EVO 2.0T engine producing 228kW and is offered in both Sportback hatch and Sedan body styles. It's a meaningful step forward from the 8V in interior tech, chassis refinement, and engine response, and AWE has engineered fitments specifically for the platform from launch.
The Gen 4 EVO 2.0T responds particularly well to flow improvements, and the 8Y's factory exhaust is conservative — quiet enough for European emissions and noise compliance but leaving real character on the table. An AWE catback is the cleanest way to unlock the engine's voice without compromising daily drivability or warranty coverage.
Touring Edition vs Track Edition — Which Is Right for Your 8Y?
Touring Edition — The Daily Driver's Choice
The AWE Touring Edition retains the rear mufflers and uses AWE's drone-cancelling 180 Technology® midpipe to deliver a deeper, sportier note from the EA888 Gen 4 EVO without highway drone. The 2.0T's character comes through cleanly — proper turbo presence, sharper throttle response, more depth at part-throttle — but the cabin stays comfortable on long drives. This is the right pick if you commute in your S3 daily, do regular highway runs, or simply don't want a constantly loud exhaust on every drive.
Track Edition — Maximum Sound
The Track Edition deletes the rear mufflers entirely for a louder, rawer note. The EA888's full character is on display — bigger turbo whoosh, more bark on overrun, noticeably more presence at idle. AWE's 180 Technology midpipe still controls drone, so the Track Edition is far more livable than a typical muffler-delete setup, but make no mistake — this is the louder of the two. Choose Track if your 8Y is a weekend toy, a track-day weapon, or you want maximum sound character at the lower of the two AWE price points.
Both systems are available with your choice of Diamond Black (more aggressive aesthetic, hides road grime particularly well on lighter colours) or Chrome Silver (traditional polished look, matches the factory satin tip style). Both finishes are double-walled and won't blue from heat.

8Y vs 8V — What's Different in the AWE Catalogue
AWE produces separate fitments for the current-generation S3 8Y (2021+) and the previous-generation 8V (2014–2020). The two cars share the basic engine family (both EA888 2.0T) but use different chassis architecture (MQB EVO vs MQB), different DSG transmissions (DQ381 vs DQ250), and different exhaust mounting. An 8V system will not fit an 8Y — always order specific to your chassis code.
One important AWE catalogue difference worth knowing: the older S3 8V is one of the few platforms that gets the AWE SwitchPath valved exhaust, plus full Conversion Kits between Track and SwitchPath. The newer 8Y currently does not have a SwitchPath option — AWE's 8Y range is Touring Edition and Track Edition only, with no Conversion Kits between them. If valve control is a hard requirement for your build, the older 8V is currently the only S3 option in the AWE range.
This is also true on the VW family — the MK7.5 Golf R gets SwitchPath, the newer MK8 Golf R doesn't. AWE develops SwitchPath fitments based on a combination of platform demand and engineering economics, and it's possible an 8Y SwitchPath could come in future — but as of this listing, it's not available.
The 8Y, MK8 Golf R, and Tiguan R — A Shared Platform Story
The S3 8Y, Volkswagen Golf R MK8, GTI MK8, and Volkswagen Tiguan R all share the MQB EVO chassis architecture and EA888 Gen 4 EVO 2.0T engine. From a parts-sharing perspective, this is excellent news for 8Y owners — many supporting modifications (brakes, suspension components, downpipes, intercoolers) are engineered for one of these cars and fit the others with minor or no changes.
This means an 8Y owner has access to a much deeper aftermarket parts ecosystem than an Audi-only platform would normally provide. We stock DBA T3 5000 2-piece front rotors (357x34mm) and DIXCEL front rotors with shared fitment across Golf R MK8 / Tiguan R / S3 8Y. The Hardrace forged aluminium front lower control arm is shared with MK7/MK7.5/MK8 Golf R, S3/RS3 8Y, and T-Roc R. Browse our AWE Golf R MK8 / GTI MK8 page for the parallel exhaust offering.
Downpipe Pairing — Scorpion 80mm for the 8Y
An AWE catback is half the 8Y exhaust story. The other half — and arguably the more important half from a power perspective — is the downpipe. The factory 8Y downpipe is the most restrictive component in the entire exhaust system, with a small primary catalytic converter that throttles the EA888 Gen 4 EVO's spool and limits how much power any tune can extract.
The Scorpion 80mm performance downpipe is the cleanest pairing for an AWE 8Y catback. Available in catted (high-flow sports cat) and catless (decat) configurations, the Scorpion downpipe is fully interchangeable with the OEM unit and saves around 3.5kg over the factory part. Shared fitment with the Golf R MK8 means engineering R&D is double what you'd see on a single-platform downpipe.
Important: Catless downpipes are not road-legal in Australia and are race/motorsport use only. The catted version is the right choice for street-driven 8Ys. An ECU remap is mandatory after fitting any aftermarket downpipe — running the factory tune with an aftermarket downpipe will trigger check engine lights and can cause unsafe fuelling. Budget for professional tuning from a reputable Audi/VW tuner experienced with the EA888 Gen 4.
Tuning & Drivetrain Considerations
No tune required for the catback alone. Both Touring and Track Edition AWE systems for the 8Y are catback designs — they fit from the catalytic converter rearward and are fully compatible with the factory ECU. No tune is required for the catback by itself.
Quattro drivetrain. The S3 8Y is a quattro all-wheel-drive platform with a transverse 2.0T and a 7-speed DSG (DQ381). The exhaust routing and rear differential clearance differs slightly from front-wheel-drive S3 derivatives — AWE engineers the 8Y catback specifically for the quattro layout.
Drone with Track Edition. Even with 180 Technology, the Track Edition is louder than Touring. If your 8Y is a daily commuter on long highway runs, Touring is usually the right pick. There's no Conversion Kit currently available for the 8Y, so this is a more permanent decision than on platforms where you can change configurations later.
Electronic Valve Simulators. The 8Y uses a factory valved exhaust system. If you remove or modify any factory valved exhaust components and run into ECU codes, AWE's Electronic Valve Simulators plug into the factory harness and prevent the soft codes from triggering check engine lights. Plug-and-play, no tuning required.
Supporting Modifications for the 8Y S3
The 8Y is well-supported at Chicane across all major upgrade categories thanks to its shared MQB EVO platform with the Golf R MK8 and Tiguan R:
Downpipe: The Scorpion 80mm performance downpipe (catted or catless) is our recommended pairing for the AWE catback.
Brakes: Factory 8Y front rotors are 357x34mm. We stock DBA T3 5000 2-piece slotted front rotors for serious track use, plus the DIXCEL high-carbon 357x34mm front rotors for street and spirited driving. DIXCEL pads in M, ES, Z, and Specom compounds cover daily through to motorsport applications.
Suspension: The Hardrace forged aluminium front lower control arm shares fitment with MK7/MK7.5/MK8 Golf R, S3 8V/8Y, RS3 8Y, and T-Roc R — a popular early upgrade for tightening up the front end. Browse our Hardrace Audi range for additional chassis components.
Tuning: The 8Y EA888 Gen 4 EVO responds well to Stage 1 (catback + tune) and Stage 2 (catback + downpipe + tune) calibration. Tuning options for the platform are evolving rapidly — contact us for current Stage 1 / Stage 2 recommendations.

Buying Notes for the 8Y in Australia
Confirm 8Y vs 8V before ordering. AWE produces separate catback fitments for the 8Y (2021+) and 8V (2014–2020). An 8V system will not fit an 8Y. Always order specific to your chassis code — it's printed on the build plate inside the driver's door jamb.
Tip choice — Diamond Black or Chrome Silver. Diamond Black is more aggressive aesthetically and hides road grime exceptionally well — particularly noticeable on white, silver, and light-coloured 8Ys. Chrome Silver is the traditional polished look that matches the factory satin tip aesthetic. Both finishes are double-walled and heat-resistant.
Catback is street-legal. Both Touring and Track Editions are catback systems that retain the factory catalytic converter and are street-legal in all Australian states. ADR compliance is maintained when the factory cat is in place. Track Edition is noticeably louder than factory — check your state's noise regulations if you're concerned about specific compliance issues.
Lead times. AWE 8Y systems typically ship in 7–9 days from order. Contact us if you need it faster — we'll see what we can do.
