Why the FL5 Is the Ideal AWE Platform

The Civic Type R FL5 (2023+) is one of the most thoroughly engineered hot-hatches ever built — a 235kW K20C1 turbocharged VTEC, a perfectly weighted 6-speed manual, and a chassis that punches well above its segment. It's also one of the most modified cars in Australia, with a strong owner community pushing the platform from factory through to serious track builds. AWE recognised the FL5's significance early and engineered both Touring and Track Edition systems specifically for the chassis — not adapted from the FK8 fitment.

The K20C1 responds particularly well to flow improvements, and the factory FL5 exhaust is conservative by design — quiet enough for global emissions and noise compliance, but leaving real gains on the table for owners who want more. An AWE catback is the cleanest way to unlock the engine's character without compromising daily drivability.

Touring Edition vs Track Edition — Which Is Right for Your FL5?

Touring Edition — The Daily Driver's Choice

The AWE Touring Edition retains the rear mufflers and uses AWE's drone-cancelling 180 Technology® midpipe to deliver a deeper, sportier note from the K20C1 without the highway drone that plagues most aftermarket Civic exhausts. The 2.0T's character comes through cleanly — proper turbo whoosh, sharper throttle response, more presence on overrun — but the cabin stays comfortable on long drives. This is the right pick if you commute in your FL5, do regular highway runs, or simply don't want a constantly loud exhaust on every drive.

Track Edition — Maximum K20C1 Sound

The Track Edition deletes the rear mufflers entirely for a louder, rawer note. The K20C1's full character is on display — bigger turbo whoosh, more bark on overrun, noticeably more presence at idle. AWE's 180 Technology midpipe still controls drone, so the Track Edition is far more livable than a typical muffler-delete setup, but make no mistake — this is the louder of the two. Choose Track if your FL5 is a weekend toy, a track-day weapon, or you want maximum sound character at the lower of the two AWE price points.

Both systems are available with your choice of Diamond Black (more aggressive aesthetic, hides road grime well) or Chrome Silver (traditional polished look, matches the factory satin tips). Both finishes are double-walled and won't blue from heat.

AWE Track-to-Touring Conversion Kit — The FL5's Hidden Flexibility

One of AWE's most under-communicated features is the Track-to-Touring Conversion Kit for the FL5. If you bought a Track Edition system and decide later that you want a quieter daily-driver experience — long commute starts, family car, neighbours have started complaining — you don't have to buy a complete new system. AWE sells the Touring rear muffler section as a standalone bolt-on kit that converts your existing Track Edition into a Touring configuration.

This is rare in the aftermarket world. Most brands force you to buy a whole new exhaust if your needs change. AWE built this into the FL5 catalogue as a deliberate ownership-experience feature. Note: AWE currently offers Track-to-Touring only on the FL5 — Touring-to-Track is not available, and there is no SwitchPath valved system for the chassis. If you want maximum flexibility, buy Track Edition first and add the Conversion Kit later when you need it.

The KORSH Downpipe + AWE Catback Pairing

An AWE catback is half the FL5 exhaust story. The other half — and arguably the more important half from a power perspective — is the downpipe. The factory FL5 downpipe is the single most restrictive component in the entire exhaust system, with a small primary catalytic converter that throttles the K20C1 turbo's spool and limits how much power any tune can extract.

The KORSH Civic Type R downpipe is our recommended pairing for an AWE catback. KORSH is an Australian-engineered downpipe with cast stainless steel flanges (not laser-cut flat plate), an integrated thermal barrier heat shield, and a direct bolt-on fitment for both FK8 and FL5. Available in catless (race/motorsport only) and 200-cell high-flow catted configurations.

A KORSH downpipe + AWE catback combination — paired with a quality tune from an experienced Honda tuner — is the cleanest way to unlock the K20C1's potential. Expect noticeably faster spool, sharper throttle response, and substantially more headroom for tuning. Read our complete Civic Type R downpipe guide for FK8 vs FL5 fitment, catted vs catless, power gains, and tuning considerations.

FL5 vs FK8 — What's Different and What's Shared

The FL5 (2023+) and FK8 (2017–2022) share the same fundamental K20C1 turbo engine architecture and downpipe routing — meaning many supporting modifications (KORSH downpipe, DIXCEL brakes, AEM fuel pump, fuel system upgrades) carry between both generations. However, the catback is FL5-specific. The FL5's revised exhaust mounting, tip placement, and rear bumper cutouts mean AWE produces separate fitments for FL5 and FK8 — a Touring or Track Edition catback designed for the FK8 will not fit an FL5 and vice versa.

If you're shopping for an FK8, contact us — we can source AWE FK8 fitments as special order.

Tuning & Drivetrain Considerations

No tune required for the catback alone. Both Touring and Track Edition AWE systems for the FL5 are catback designs — they fit from the catalytic converter rearward and are fully compatible with the factory ECU. No tune is required for the catback by itself.

Downpipe absolutely requires a tune. If you pair the AWE catback with a KORSH (or RV6) downpipe, professional tuning is mandatory. Running an aftermarket downpipe on the factory tune will trigger check engine lights and can cause unsafe fuelling conditions on the K20C1. Budget for a professional tune from a reputable Honda tuner experienced with the FL5/K20C1.

Drone with Track Edition. Even with 180 Technology, the Track Edition is louder than Touring. If your FL5 is a daily commuter on long highway runs, Touring is usually the right pick — or buy Track and add the Track-to-Touring Conversion Kit later if circumstances change.

Electronic Valve Simulators. The FL5 doesn't use a factory valved exhaust system, so the AWE Electronic Valve Simulators aren't typically required for this platform. Available if needed for unusual configurations.

Supporting Modifications for the FL5 Civic Type R

An exhaust is rarely the only modification on a Type R. Here's what we typically pair with AWE on an FL5 build:

Downpipe: The KORSH downpipe (catless or 200-cell catted) is our top pick — Australian-engineered with cast stainless flanges. The RV6 catted downpipe is the well-known alternative. See our downpipe guide for the full comparison.

Brakes: The FL5 uses a Brembo 4-piston front caliper with 350x32mm rotors and a 305x11mm solid rear rotor. We stock the full DIXCEL range for FK8/FL5 — pads and rotors across every compound from M Type (low dust street) to Z Type (street/track) and Specom B (motorsport). DIXCEL is our recommended brake upgrade for the FL5.

Fuel system: The K20C1's direct injection setup is the limiting factor on big-power FL5 builds. The AEM 340LPH E85 plug-and-play fuel pump handles the lift-side, and the Xtreme DI 5500 psi soft line replaces the failure-prone factory hard line on serious builds.

Suspension: Browse our Hardrace range for FL5 for control arms, sway bars, and chassis bracing. The FL5's adaptive damper setup means coilover options need careful selection — contact us before ordering.

Construction, Warranty & Authenticity

Every AWE system for the FL5 Civic Type R is built from CNC mandrel-bent T304L stainless steel with TIG-welded joints and double-walled 102mm tips that won't blue from heat. AWE backs every system with their lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, and Australian customers receive full warranty support through Chicane.

All AWE product sold at Chicane Australia is supplied through AWE's authorised distribution channel — every system carries verifiable AWE serial identification and is covered by the factory warranty. Buying from an authorised stockist is the only way to guarantee both genuine product and warranty coverage in Australia.

Buying Notes for the FL5 in Australia

Confirm FL5 vs FK8 before ordering. AWE produces separate catback fitments for the FL5 (2023+) and FK8 (2017–2022). The downpipe (KORSH, RV6) is shared between both generations, but the catback is not. Always order the system specific to your model year.

Tip choice — Diamond Black or Chrome Silver. Diamond Black is more aggressive aesthetically and hides road grime exceptionally well — particularly noticeable on white, grey, and Championship White FL5s. Chrome Silver is the traditional polished look that matches the factory satin tip aesthetic. Both finishes are double-walled and heat-resistant. Choose based on your car's colour and personal preference.

Catback is street-legal. Both Touring and Track Editions are catback systems that retain the factory catalytic converter and are street-legal in all Australian states. Track Edition is noticeably louder than factory — check your state's noise regulations if you're concerned. ADR compliance is maintained when the factory cat is in place.

Lead times. AWE FL5 systems typically ship in 7–9 days from order. Contact us if you need it faster — we'll see what we can do.
