The MK8 Platform — Gen 4 EVO and What's Changed
The MK8 Golf R and GTI launched in Australia for the 2021 model year, both built on the EA888 Gen 4 EVO 2.0T engine — a meaningful step forward from the Gen 3 unit in the MK7/MK7.5. The Golf R now produces 235kW (up from 213kW in the MK7.5), while the GTI sits at 180kW. Both share the MQB EVO chassis, the DQ381 7-speed DSG, and a heavily revised exhaust architecture that AWE has engineered fitments around from the ground up.
One difference worth knowing upfront: the MK8 Golf R and GTI do not currently get the AWE SwitchPath valved system — that's a MK7.5-exclusive on this VW family. AWE's MK8 catalogue covers Touring Edition, Track Edition, and Conversion Kits between the two. If valve control is a hard requirement for your build, look at our AWE Golf R MK7.5 page.
Touring Edition vs Track Edition — Which Is Right for Your MK8?
Touring Edition — Daily Driver Performance
Both the Golf R MK8 and GTI MK8 Touring Edition systems retain the rear mufflers and use AWE's drone-cancelling 180 Technology® midpipe to deliver a deeper, sportier note without highway drone. Throttle response sharpens, the Gen 4 EVO's character comes through, and the cabin stays comfortable on long drives. The Touring is the right pick if you commute in the car daily, do long road trips, or want a meaningful upgrade without the social cost of a constantly loud exhaust.
Track Edition — Maximum Sound
The Track Edition deletes the rear mufflers entirely for a louder, rawer note with the full character of the EA888 on display. AWE's 180 Technology midpipe still controls drone, so it's far more livable than a typical muffler-delete setup — but make no mistake, this is the louder of the two. Choose Track if your MK8 is a weekend toy, a track-day weapon, or you want the most aggressive sound. Track Edition systems sit at a lower price point than Touring Edition.

AWE Conversion Kits — Buy Now, Change Later
One of AWE's best-kept secrets is the Conversion Kit — a standalone rear muffler section that bolts onto your existing AWE catback to convert it between Touring and Track configurations. The MK8 platform gets bidirectional kits for both Golf R and GTI:
Golf R MK8 Touring-to-Track Conversion Kit: If you started with a Touring Edition and decide you want maximum sound later, this kit converts your existing system to Track configuration.
Golf R MK8 Track-to-Touring Conversion Kit: The reverse — if life circumstances change (long commute, family car, etc.) and you want to quieten your Track Edition down without buying a new system.
GTI MK8 Touring-to-Track Conversion Kit: Same concept, GTI fitment.
GTI MK8 Track-to-Touring Conversion Kit: GTI reverse conversion.
This flexibility is rare in the aftermarket exhaust world — most brands require you to buy a complete new system if your needs change. AWE built the MK8 Conversion Kits as a deliberate ownership-experience feature. Read our Conversion Kits guide for full fitment details and how the kits install.
Golf R MK8 vs GTI MK8 — What's Different?
Although the Golf R and GTI MK8 share the EA888 Gen 4 EVO engine, the chassis, and the DSG, AWE produces separate exhaust fitments for each:
Drivetrain layout: The Golf R is 4MOTION all-wheel-drive (Haldex 5), the GTI is front-wheel-drive. This means different rear subframe geometry and different exhaust routing, particularly around the rear axle.
Tip configuration: The Golf R uses quad tip layout (the factory Akrapovic-style four-tip arrangement), while the GTI uses dual tips. AWE's systems match the factory tip count on each car.
Power output: The Golf R's 235kW responds slightly more to flow improvements than the GTI's 180kW — though for both cars, the catback is primarily about sound character, throttle response, and aesthetic, not headline power figures. For real power gains, look at downpipes and tuning.
Pricing differential: GTI systems sit at a slightly lower price point than equivalent Golf R fitments due to the simpler dual-tip configuration.
Always order the system specific to your model — Golf R systems will not fit a GTI and vice versa.
Tuning & Drivetrain Considerations
No tune required for the catback. Both Touring and Track Editions are catback systems — they fit from the catalytic converter rearward and are fully compatible with the factory ECU. No tune is needed.
For serious power, pair with a downpipe and tune. The MK8's biggest restriction is the factory downpipe and the conservative Australian-spec calibration. A downpipe combined with a Stage 2 tune typically takes a Golf R MK8 from ~235kW to 280kW+ at the wheels. The MK8 platform is still relatively new — tuning options are evolving rapidly. Contact us for current Stage 1 / Stage 2 recommendations.
Drone with Track Edition. Even with 180 Technology, the Track Edition is louder than Touring. If your MK8 is a daily commuter on long highway runs, Touring is usually the right pick — or buy Track and add a Track-to-Touring Conversion Kit later if needed.
Electronic Valve Simulators. If you've removed any factory valved exhaust components and run into ECU codes, AWE's Electronic Valve Simulators ($199) plug into the factory harness and prevent the soft codes from triggering check engine lights. Plug-and-play, no tuning required.
Supporting Modifications for the MK8 Golf R & GTI
The MK8 platform is well-supported at Chicane across all the major upgrade categories:
Intake: The MST Cold Air Intake for Golf R MK8 is purpose-built for the Gen 4 EVO with a heat shield, dry cone filter, and revised inlet pipe. Pairs perfectly with an AWE catback for a complete intake-and-exhaust upgrade.
Brakes: Factory front discs on the Golf R MK8 are 357x34mm (larger than MK7.5). We stock DBA T3 5000 2-piece slotted rotors for the Golf R, plus DBA T2 and T3 4000-series rear rotors that share fitment with MK7. Paragon 2-piece front and rear rotors and the Paragon 6-piston front big brake kit cover heavier track use. EBC Redstuff and Bremtec Euroline Ceramic+ pads handle the spirited-street to fast-road brackets.
Suspension: The Hardrace forged aluminium front lower control arm shares fitment with MK7/MK7.5 and Audi S3 8Y — a popular early upgrade for tightening up the front end. The Hardrace rear sway bar (Golf R MK8 AWD) reduces body roll and dials in oversteer balance.

Construction, Warranty & Authenticity
Every AWE system for the MK8 Golf R and GTI is built from CNC mandrel-bent T304L stainless steel with TIG-welded joints and double-walled 102mm Diamond Black tips that won't blue from heat. AWE backs every system with their lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects, and Australian customers receive full warranty support through Chicane.
All AWE product sold at Chicane Australia is supplied through AWE's authorised distribution channel — every system carries verifiable AWE serial identification and is covered by the factory warranty. Buying from an authorised stockist is the only way to guarantee both genuine product and warranty coverage in Australia.
Buying Notes for the MK8 in Australia
Confirm Golf R vs GTI before ordering. AWE produces separate fitments — Golf R systems will not fit a GTI and vice versa. The Golf R uses a quad-tip layout and the GTI uses dual tips.
Catback is street-legal. Both Touring and Track Editions are catback systems that retain the factory catalytic converter and are street-legal in all Australian states. Track Edition is noticeably louder than factory — check your state's noise regulations if you're unsure.
MK8 R variants: AWE's standard MK8 Golf R fitment covers the standard car. Limited-edition variants like the R 333 and the upcoming R "20 Years" edition may have different exhaust mounting due to factory Akrapovic systems being fitted from new. Contact us before ordering if you have one of these special editions.
Lead times. AWE MK8 systems typically ship in 7–9 days from order. Contact us if you need it faster — we'll see what we can do.
