Expansion Tanks
A coolant expansion tank holds coolant as it expands with engine heat and returns it to the system as the engine cools. It also gives trapped air somewhere to separate out of the coolant. This range covers vehicle-specific coolant tanks, overflow tanks and universal expansion tanks from Radium Engineering, Mishimoto, PERRIN, COBB Tuning, PRL Motorsports, OKUYAMA / CARBING and Got It Rex (GIR). It sits within our Cooling range.

Choosing the Right Part
Start by deciding between a vehicle-specific tank and a universal tank, then check the details below.
-
Vehicle-specific tanks: These are listed by model and chassis code, so match the code to your car. Options include:
- Subaru WRX / STI (GC8, GDA, GDB, GGA, VA, VAB, VNH and more)
- Subaru BRZ (ZC6 / ZD8)
- Subaru Forester (EJ)
- Toyota 86 (ZN6) and GR86 (ZN8)
- Toyota GR Corolla (GZEA14, G16E-GTS)
- Honda Civic Type R (FK8 / FL5)
- Nissan GT-R (R35)
- Ford Focus ST / RS (LW / LZ)
- Ford Mustang (S550)
- Lotus Elise / Exige (2ZZ-GE)
-
Same chassis, different generations: Some models have separate tanks for different years. For example, COBB lists separate tanks for the GD/GG WRX/STI and the VA/VAB (18+) models. Confirm the year and chassis before ordering.
-
Universal tanks: Radium Engineering universal expansion tanks come in 822mL and 1240mL sizes. Choose the capacity that suits your cooling system and the space you have available.
-
Mounting location: For the Lotus Elise / Exige (2ZZ-GE), Radium Engineering offers both an OEM-location kit and a firewall-mount tank. Pick the layout that suits your engine bay.
-
Construction: Options include baffled designs, such as the PRL Motorsports tank for the Civic Type R, and billet designs, such as the GIR tank for EJ-engined Subarus. Baffling is generally used to help limit coolant movement inside the tank.
Installation & What You'll Need
Before ordering, check whether the listing is a complete kit or the tank only. Universal tanks need a suitable mounting position, plus hoses and fittings to suit your setup. In most cases the cooling system will need to be drained, refilled with the correct coolant and bled of air, following the vehicle manufacturer's procedure. Never open a hot cooling system.
Installation by a professional is recommended.
FAQ
What does a coolant expansion tank do?
It holds coolant as it expands with engine heat and returns it to the system as the engine cools. It also helps air separate from the coolant.
Will a universal expansion tank fit my car?
Universal tanks, such as the Radium Engineering 822mL and 1240mL tanks, are not made for a specific vehicle. They need a mounting position, hoses and fittings to suit your setup. Vehicle-specific tanks are listed by model and chassis code.
Are expansion tanks and overflow tanks the same thing?
Manufacturers often use the terms interchangeably. Choose a tank listed for your chassis code, or check the product details, to make sure it suits your car's cooling system.
Which brands do you carry?
