Choosing the Right Part
- Know your engine code: Timing parts are engine-specific. Check whether your car has the G16E-GTS, EJ20/EJ25, RB20/RB25/RB26/RB30 or 4G63/4G63T before ordering.
- Belt or chain: The G16E-GTS in the GR Yaris (GXPA16) and GR Corolla (GZEA14H) uses a timing chain. The Subaru EJ, Nissan RB and Mitsubishi 4G63 engines in this range use a timing belt.
- Check the chassis code: Confirm your chassis, such as GXPA16, GZEA14H, CT9A, R31–R34 or WC34, and the model years listed on each product.
- Check variable cam timing: The Tomei adjustable cam gear set suits single AVCS Subaru WRX (2001–2014) and STI (2001–2007) only.
- Intake or exhaust side: Some G16E-GTS camshaft timing valve assemblies are side-specific. Check the listing before you buy.
- OEM or adjustable: Genuine and OEM parts restore factory timing. Adjustable cam gears let cam timing be set away from the factory position, which is typically done during tuning.
Installation & What You'll Need
Installation by a professional is recommended. Incorrect timing can cause serious engine damage, and engine-specific tools and procedures are often required.
When servicing a timing system, check the condition of the tensioners, guides, dampeners and seals at the same time. Fresh gaskets and the correct engine fasteners may also be needed. If you fit adjustable cam gears, the cam timing should be set by an experienced tuner.
