Brake Cooling

Brake Cooling

Brake cooling is the cheapest horsepower you can add to your brake system. Once pads and rotors get hot enough to fade, no amount of caliper or compound upgrade fixes the problem on its own, the fix is getting more cold air onto the rotor face. Chicane Australia stocks brake cooling ducts, backing plates and duct hose kits built for cars doing repeat hot laps at The Bend or Wakefield Park, as well as daily drivers and tow cars that cook their brakes in traffic or under load. This range suits anyone stepping up track pace, running bigger pads or rotors than standard, or chasing a pedal that stays firm lap after lap instead of going long and soft.

Brake cooling kits are typically matched to a specific chassis and brake package rather than a generic bolt-on, since duct routing depends on the bumper bar, guard liner and hub/upright design. Popular platforms include Subaru WRX/STI, Toyota 86/GR86 and BRZ, Nissan Silvia, Skyline and 350Z/370Z, Mazda MX-5, and common European chassis like the BMW E and F-series and VW/Audi MQB platforms. If you're unsure which duct kit suits your chassis and brake setup, get in touch before ordering.

Why Brake Cooling

Brake fade almost always comes down to heat, not pad grip. Track day regulars and time attack builds push rotor temps well past what a standard duct or blanked-off bumper was designed for, so directing airflow straight at the rotor hat and hub keeps temperatures in the working range of the pad compound and fluid. Chicane stocks cooling kits designed to pair with the bigger rotors and calipers already sold in our brake range, so the whole system is matched rather than fighting itself.

Fitment & Installation

Most brake cooling kits route flexible ducting from a NACA duct, front bumper opening or fender liner intake through to a backing plate near the hub. Fitment depends on the caliper and rotor size already installed, so check duct kit compatibility against any big brake kit or rotor upgrade fitted to the car. A typical install needs the wheel and guard liner off, some trimming or drilling of the liner for the hose pass-through, and zip ties or clips to keep the ducting clear of moving suspension components. This is a straightforward job for most installers, but factor in extra time if the bumper needs custom hose mounts fabricated.

FAQ

Will a brake cooling kit fit my car with standard brakes?
Most kits are designed around specific rotor and caliper sizes, so check the listed fitment against your current setup, especially if you've already upgraded to a big brake kit.

Do I need brake cooling for street driving?
Most street cars don't need it. Brake cooling earns its keep on track days, time attack, towing or repeated hard braking where fade becomes a real risk.

Does adding brake cooling affect my warranty or ADR compliance?
Ducting that only redirects airflow generally doesn't affect compliance, but any guard or bumper modification should be checked against your state's engineering rules before track or road use.

What else should I upgrade alongside brake cooling?
A cooling kit works best alongside a track-capable pad compound and fresh high-temperature brake fluid, since ducting only helps if the rest of the system can handle the heat too.
