Installation by a professional is recommended. Valvetrain work involves removing the camshafts and setting valve clearance, so follow the factory service manual for your engine. With shim-type bucket tappets, valve clearances need to be measured and set during assembly. Replacement gaskets may be needed when the cam covers or related components are removed. What is the difference between a hydraulic lifter and a shim bucket tappet?
A hydraulic lifter uses oil pressure to take up valve clearance automatically. A shim bucket tappet uses a shim to set the clearance, which is measured and adjusted during assembly.
