Helper springs keep the main spring captive at full droop, which stops the clunk you get over driveways and big compressions on lowered cars. They also let you run a shorter or softer main spring without the spring going loose in the perch. Spring seats and perches matter for the same reason: a seat with sloppy tolerances lets the spring shift under load, which shows up as uneven wear and inconsistent ride height side to side.
