PRL Motorsports for the FK8 Civic Type R

The FK8 Civic Type R launched in 2017 with Honda's K20C1 2.0L turbo — a genuinely capable platform that has earned its place as one of the best modern hot hatches. But anyone who's tracked an FK8 (or even pushed one on a hot day) knows the factory cooling and intake setup gives up before the engine does. Heat soak is real, charge air temps climb fast, and the ECU pulls timing the moment things get warm.

PRL Motorsports built their entire FK8 product line around fixing those weak points. Founded in 2007 in Pennsylvania, USA, PRL is the preferred Honda performance manufacturer for a reason — every intercooler, intake and charge pipe is designed and dyno-tested specifically for the FK8, not adapted from another platform. All FK8 PRL parts fit RHD international models without modification.

Intercooler Upgrade — The First Mod Every FK8 Needs

The PRL Billet Intercooler is widely considered the first essential upgrade for any FK8. The 26.5 x 3.5 x 7.25" bar-and-plate core delivers an 85% increase in surface area and 83% increase in internal flow over the OEM intercooler, rated to 550+ horsepower. Billet machined aluminium end tanks use the factory mounting points and air ducts — no cutting, fitting or trimming required.

On a stock-tune FK8 the intercooler upgrade reduces charge air temperatures meaningfully, restoring full power across repeated pulls and on hot days. On a tuned FK8 it's a prerequisite — the factory intercooler can't keep up with even modest boost increases. Pair with the PRL Charge Pipe Kit for optimal fitment and to eliminate the rubber factory charge pipes that are prone to expansion and failure.

High Volume Intake (HVI) — Street MAF vs Race MAF

The PRL HVI is the best-selling FK8 intake on the market. It uses a rotomolded HDPE airbox that ties into the factory air duct and seal, a 6" cone filter, and a billet 2-piece MAF housing with velocity stack for maximum airflow with proper fuel trims.

Two MAF housing options come standard with the kit, and choosing correctly matters:

Street MAF housing: No tune required. Maintains factory fuel trims, drops straight in with the stock ECU map. This is the right choice if you're not running Hondata FlashPro, KTuner or another tune solution. Most FK8 owners will run this MAF housing for the life of their car.

Race MAF housing: Largest MAF housing available for the platform, rated to 600+ horsepower, 47% increase in airflow volume over the factory MAF. Requires a tune or recalibration to function correctly — the ECU reads incorrect airflow values without a tune. Choose this if you're already tuned or have a tuner lined up for your build.

Order the wrong one and you either leave power on the table (Street MAF on a built car) or trigger check engine lights (Race MAF without a tune). Get in touch before ordering if you're unsure.

Titanium Turbocharger Inlet Pipe

The factory turbocharger inlet is one of the FK8's biggest hidden restrictions, particularly as power climbs. PRL's titanium inlet pipe replaces it with a cast aluminium inlet transitioning to a titanium crossover pipe — gasket-matched 64mm ID at the compressor inlet, opening to 80mm OD / 78mm ID through the crossover. That's over 50% more airflow than the factory inlet.

The titanium inlet pipe only works with the PRL HVI intake — the factory airbox is not compatible. Delivers measurable bottom-end power and improved spool, and becomes essential on any FK8 running the P700 turbo or pushing beyond stock power levels.

Charge Pipe Kit

The factory rubber charge pipes are known to expand under boost, weaken with heat cycling, and on the track have been known to fail entirely. PRL's charge pipe kit uses a smooth-flowing larger diameter cold-side for increased airflow, plus a factory diameter hot-side outlet to aid turbocharger spool. 4-ply silicone couplers throughout — chosen specifically for low thermal heat transfer (helps with heat soak) and resistance to expansion under boost.

No tune required, compatible with all factory-location intercoolers (including the OEM unit), and pairs perfectly with the PRL Intercooler Upgrade. If you're running the intercooler and HVI, charge pipes are the next logical addition.

Race Downpipe & Front Pipe

PRL's downpipe and front pipe combination unlocks significant exhaust gas flow for any K20C1 build. The race downpipe replaces the factory cat assembly, the front pipe ties into your chosen catback exhaust. Both are designed to fit factory mounting points and pair with stock or aftermarket catbacks.

For an FK8 already running the PRL Intercooler and HVI, adding the downpipe is the single biggest power jump on the platform — typically 30+ horsepower at the wheels with a tune. The race downpipe is intended for race and motorsport use only — confirm legality in your state before ordering.

P700 Drop-In Turbocharger Upgrade

The P700 is currently the most powerful drop-in turbo available for the K20C1 — supporting over 600 horsepower without compromising spool time. It uses a High Efficiency compressor wheel taller than typical billet upgrades, with advanced aerodynamic technology including a tapered tip exducer and cutback blade design. The High Efficiency turbine wheel and larger wastegate actuator bore reduce backpressure.

The P700 is not a bolt-on power adder — it's the foundation of a serious build. Supporting mods required: PRL Intercooler, HVI Race MAF, titanium inlet pipe, charge pipes, downpipe, front pipe, fuel system upgrade (injectors and pumps), and a professional tune. FK8 Build Stages — A Quick Guide

If you're building an FK8 progressively, here's the order most owners follow:

Stage 1 (bolt-on, no tune): PRL Intercooler + PRL HVI Street MAF + PRL Charge Pipes. Gives meaningful cooling improvement and a noticeable performance bump without a tune required. Daily-drivable, reliable, addresses the FK8's biggest weakness.

Stage 2 (tuned bolt-ons): Add the PRL Race Downpipe + Front Pipe + a tune (Hondata FlashPro or KTuner). At this point you should upgrade to the HVI Race MAF housing. Typically 30+ wheel horsepower over Stage 1 and a transformed driving experience.

Stage 3 (titanium inlet + supporting mods): Add the PRL Titanium Turbocharger Inlet Pipe to remove the last factory restriction in the intake tract. At this stage the factory turbo is reaching its limits and supporting fuel system upgrades (flex fuel kit, upgraded pumps) become worthwhile.

Stage 4 (P700 build): P700 turbo + full supporting mods + built fuel system + professional tune. 500–600+ wheel horsepower territory. This is a build, not a weekend job.
