Choosing the Right Part
  • Pump type: In-tank low pressure pumps (LPFP) send fuel from the tank to the engine. Inline pumps mount outside the tank. High pressure fuel pumps (HPFP) on direct-injection engines raise fuel pressure for the injectors. Examples include the Xtreme-DI HPFP for the Ford Focus RS (LZ), Focus ST, Mustang 2.3 EcoBoost (S550) and Honda Civic Type R (FK8/FL5), the Full Race HPFP for the Civic Type R (FK8/FL5), and APR high pressure pumps for Audi models.
  • Flow rating: Pumps are rated in litres per hour (LPH). Ratings in this range include 255LPH, 340LPH, 400LPH, 460LPH and 525LPH. Choose a rating that suits your fuel type and power target.
  • Fuel type: If you run ethanol blends, choose a pump the manufacturer lists as E85-rated, such as the AEM 340LPH E85 or the Walbro 460LPH and 525LPH E85 pumps.
  • Universal or vehicle-specific: Before buying a universal pump, check its body size, inlet style and mounting. Options include 65mm bodies with hooks, offset inlets and metric fittings. Vehicle-specific kits are listed by chassis code, for example Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 7/8/9 (CT9A) and X (CZ4A), Subaru WRX/STI (GC8/GD/GG/GDB, GE/GH/GR/GV, GRB/GVB/VAB), Subaru Liberty GT (BL/BP), Audi Q3 (F3), Audi S5 (B8), Audi RS4 (B7) and BMW M3 (E36/E46).
  • Engine code: Some high pressure pumps are listed by engine, such as the APR pumps for the 2.9T/3.0T EA839 and the 4.2L V8 in the Audi S5 (B8). Check build date notes too, such as "Pre 11/08".
  • Brushless pumps: Brushless pumps such as the Walbro E5LM need a pump controller. Injector Dynamics offers the BPC100 Brushless Pump Controller as a kit with the E5LM pump.
Installation & What You'll Need

Depending on the pump and vehicle, you may also need:

  • A pump holder, hanger or internals kit. Examples include the COBB Tuning pump holder for the Lancer Evolution X (CZ4A) and COBB pump internals for the Audi S3 (8V), VW Golf GTI and R (Mk7/Mk7.5), Golf R (Mk6), Mazda 3 MPS (BK/BL) and Mazda 6 MPS (GG).
  • Pump clamps and inlet filter socks. Radium Engineering offers a 41–43mm clamp and a 19mm ID inlet filter sock.
  • A pump controller for brushless pumps.
  • Wiring suited to the pump, plus any tuning changes your fuel system upgrade requires. Check with your tuner.

Some kits are sold without a pump, such as the Radium Engineering Fuel Pump Kit (No Pump Included) for the BMW M3 (E36/E46). Check the product listing for exactly what is included. Installation by a professional is recommended.

FAQ

What is the difference between a low pressure and a high pressure fuel pump?
A low pressure pump, usually in the tank, supplies fuel from the tank to the engine. A high pressure pump is used on direct-injection engines to raise fuel pressure for the injectors.

Do I need an E85-rated fuel pump to run ethanol?
Yes. Choose a pump the manufacturer lists as suitable for E85. Several pumps in this range carry an E85 rating.

What does LPH mean?
LPH stands for litres per hour. It is the pump's flow rating as published by the manufacturer.

Will a universal in-tank pump fit my car?
It depends on your pump hanger or holder. Check the pump's body size, inlet style and mounting. Otherwise, choose a vehicle-specific kit listed for your chassis code.
