Why AST x MOTON Suits the Civic Type R

The Civic Type R lives or dies on front-end grip. It's a 1,400kg front-wheel-drive hatch making over 235kW from the K20C1, asking the front tyres to do all the work — steering, braking, and putting the power down. Every kilo of corner weight, every degree of camber, every Hz of damper response matters more on a FWD platform than on almost anything else on the road.

That makes the FL5 and FK8 unusually rewarding cars to set up properly — and unusually punishing of cheap suspension. The factory adaptive dampers are good for what they are, but they're a closed system with a fixed tune and no rebuild path. AST and MOTON open everything up: spring rate, damping curve, ride height, top mount geometry — all spec'd to your build and all serviceable for the life of the car.

One detail matters more on the Type R than on most cars: front camber adjustment. Pulling the factory camber pins gets you to roughly -1.8° at the front. For serious track use, you need -3.0° or more — and the only way to get there without changing ball joints is via a coilover with adjustable top mounts. Every AST 5100 Competition, 5200, 5300, and the full MOTON range for the Type R ships with camber-adjustable front tops as standard.

The AST x MOTON Range for FL5 (2023+)

The FL5 is now the focus of the Type R aftermarket, and the AST and MOTON ranges for the platform are fully developed. We supply:

  • AST 5100 Competition (Inverted): The flagship single-adjust setup. Inverted strut design for lateral load handling, camber-adjustable front top mounts, rebound damping adjustment. The benchmark fast-road-plus-trackday choice.
  • AST 5200 Series (2-Way): Independent rebound and compression with remote reservoirs. Where serious FL5 club-day builds tend to land — separating corner-entry damping from corner-exit damping unlocks a level of setup precision that single-adjust can't reach.
  • AST 5300 Series (3-Way): Rebound, low-speed compression, high-speed compression each on its own adjuster. The top of the AST range, suited to time attack and semi-pro use.
  • MOTON 1-Way Clubsport: Non-inverted monotube, 1-way 12-position rebound, camber-adjustable front tops. The entry into MOTON.
  • MOTON 2-Way Clubsport: Inverted, monotube, independent rebound and compression with remote reservoirs. 15-step damping adjustment.
  • MOTON 3-Way Motorsport: Inverted, monotube, elevated top guide and helper piston for low-friction operation. Independent rebound, low-speed compression, and high-speed compression. The damper spec for FL5 builds running aero, slicks, or Group N–style competition.

The AST x MOTON Range for FK8 (2017–2021)

The FK8 shares enough geometry with the FL5 — and enough motorsport pedigree globally — that the AST and MOTON range is fully spec'd for the platform, even if the on-site listings currently focus on the FL5. FK8 kits are made-to-order at the Dutch facility against the same valving philosophy as the FL5: street-streetable through to motorsport-ready, fully rebuildable, with camber-adjustable tops as standard.

Both 5100 / 5200 / 5300 AST configurations and the full MOTON 1/2/3-way ladder are available for the FK8 — talk to us about your build before ordering and we'll spec the kit against your driving style.

Tuning and Setup

The Type R rewards careful setup more than almost any car we sell parts for. A few essential reads:

Once you're lowered, get a fresh four-wheel alignment that accounts for the new ride height and roll behaviour. The Type R's aggressive camber requirements mean a generic "factory spec" alignment will leave performance on the table.

Pair With Your Civic Type R Brake and Chassis Upgrades

A coilover-equipped FL5 or FK8 exposes the limits of the factory pad compound and rotor surface — particularly on track, where the Brembo system is capable but undersized for sustained use. Worth looking at alongside your coilover order:

Frequently Asked Questions

Which AST or MOTON series is right for my Type R?

For a street-primary FL5 or FK8 with occasional track days, AST 5100 Competition is the benchmark. For a dedicated club-day or driver-coaching car, AST 5200 2-way is where most serious Type R builds land. For time attack, dedicated track use, or a competition-spec car, MOTON 2-way or 3-way is the correct spec. The 1/2/3-way blog walks through this in detail.

Do I lose factory adaptive damping when I fit coilovers?

Yes — full coilovers replace the factory dampers entirely, so the adaptive system is no longer in the loop. The AST and MOTON range gives you a much broader tuning bandwidth than the factory closed-loop system, and the dampers are revalvable, so you can retune the car as your build evolves. If you're keeping factory dampers but want to address electronic damping fault codes after lowering, an Öhlins EDC Cancellation Kit is also stocked.

What camber can I run with AST or MOTON on a Type R?

The camber-adjustable front top mounts on AST 5100 Competition, 5200, 5300, and the MOTON range give you the geometry range to comfortably reach -3.0° front. For dedicated track use targeting -3.2° to -3.8°, pair the coilover with adjustable rear arms for matched rear camber, and confirm clearance on your wheel/tyre combination before finalising the alignment.

Are AST and MOTON coilovers rebuildable?

Yes. Every damper is fully serviceable. Seals can be replaced, oil refreshed, and the internal valving respec'd for a new spring rate, aero package, or shift from street to competition use. A well-maintained set lasts decades rather than being a consumable.

FK8 vs FL5 — does the kit differ?

Yes. Although the FK8 and FL5 share the K20C1 engine and a related chassis architecture, the suspension geometry and required damper spec differ between generations. AST and MOTON build platform-specific kits — confirm your variant before ordering, or message us through the product page and we'll spec correctly.

What's the lead time?

AST and MOTON are built to order at the Dutch facility. Typical lead time is around four weeks for the standard AST range; MOTON and FK8-spec builds can run longer. If you need it faster for a specific event, talk to us before you order.

Do I need a wheel alignment after fitting?

Yes, always. Any ride-height change alters camber, toe, and caster — so a full four-wheel alignment is essential. The Type R is more sensitive to alignment than most cars; a generic factory-spec alignment after a coilover install will leave grip on the table. See the camber setup guide for FK8/FL5-specific recommendations.
