Factory intake systems are built around noise targets and worst-case service intervals, so they usually give up flow through restrictive snorkels and small airbox inlets. An aftermarket Air Intake removes that restriction and, on turbo cars, can reduce the pressure drop ahead of the compressor. Gains on a stock naturally aspirated engine are modest and mostly show up in throttle response and sound. On a tuned turbo car, intake flow becomes a real limit, which is why intakes sit early in most boosted build lists.

The trade-off worth knowing: open element intakes draw warmer engine bay air and can be noisier than some owners expect. Sealed airbox designs keep intake temperatures closer to ambient and are the safer pick for hot Australian summer driving and track days.

Check year, engine code and market before ordering. AU-delivered models can differ from US or JDM cars in MAF sensor type, airbox mounting and available bonnet clearance, so fitment notes on the individual product page take priority. Cars with an aftermarket blow off valve or non-standard turbo may need a specific recirculation port.

Most intakes are a bolt-on job using basic hand tools and take an hour or two. Installers commonly reuse or transfer the factory MAF sensor, and some kits require the crank case breather and boost reference lines to be re-routed. Cars running a MAF-based tune, particularly Subaru and VAG platforms, should be re-tuned or at least re-scaled after an intake change to keep fuelling correct. Leave the original airbox aside for resale or roadworthy purposes.

Will an Air Intake add power on a stock car?
Expect small gains, usually a few kilowatts at best on a standard engine, plus sharper throttle feel and more induction noise. Bigger numbers come once the car is tuned and other restrictions are addressed.

Do I need a tune after fitting one?
Many intakes are designed to work on the factory calibration. Cars with MAF-based tuning, or kits that change the MAF housing diameter, should be re-tuned for correct fuelling.

Cold air intake or short ram?
Sealed cold air designs run cooler intake temperatures and suit hot weather and track use. Short rams are simpler, louder and generally easier to fit in tight engine bays.

Can I use my existing filter?
