• Engine code: Springs and retainers are listed by engine. Examples include EJ20, EJ25 and EJ257, FA20, FA24D, 2JZ-GTE and 2JZ-GE (including VVTi), 3S-GTE, 4G63 and 4G63T, RB26DETT, VR38DETT, VK56, TB48DE, B58, S58, Honda B-Series VTEC and the Audi/Lamborghini 5.2L V10.
• Spring style: Retainers are specific to the spring design: single, dual, beehive, cylindrical or conical. Choose the retainer listed for your spring. Some are matched to a particular kit, such as the GSC5756 kit with the TVS1850 spring, or the GSC5056 kit for the FA20.
• Bucket type: 3S-GTE kits come in shim-under and shimless/shim-over bucket versions. Confirm which your head uses.
• Intake or exhaust: Some engines, such as the B58 and S58, have separate intake and exhaust retainer sets.
• Quantity: Check whether a listing is a single item or a full set for your engine.
• Intended use: Some kits are marked race only. Check the listing before you buy.

Fitting valve springs and retainers needs a valve spring compressor and careful handling of the valve keepers. It often makes sense to replace the valve stem seals at the same time. Check that the spring suits your camshaft, and refer to the camshaft manufacturer's spring recommendations if you are upgrading camshafts. Installation by a professional is recommended.
