R34 Skyline Coverage — Which Variants Are Supported

Alcon's R34 kits are engineered for the BNR34 GT-R chassis and the ER34 GT-T turbo platform, covering the full production run from 1999 to 2002:

  • R34 GT-R (BNR34, RB26DETT 2.6L twin-turbo): Standard GT-R, V-Spec, V-Spec II, M-Spec, V-Spec II Nur, M-Spec Nur, V-Spec N1, Z-Tune
  • R34 GT-T (ER34, RB25DET NEO 2.5L turbo): Rear-wheel-drive turbo Skyline coupe
  • R34 25GT-Four (ENR34, RB25DET NEO AWD): AWD version of the GT-T
  • Naturally aspirated R34 25GT (RB25DE NEO): Some Alcon kits suit the non-turbo variants where wheel clearance allows

Wheel Clearance Warning: R34 GT-R came factory with 245/40 ZR18 tyres on 18-inch wheels. Most Alcon BBK kits for the R34 require minimum 18-inch wheels, with the larger 380mm+ rotor kits typically needing 18" or 19" wheel sizes depending on wheel design and offset. Verify wheel fitment against the Alcon template before ordering — BBK kits are built to order and cannot be returned for wheel clearance issues.

Why the R34 Skyline Needs a Brake Upgrade

The R34 GT-R rolled out of the factory with what were, in 1999, very serious brakes — 324mm × 30mm front rotors with Brembo 4-piston calipers, 300mm × 22mm rear rotors with Brembo 2-piston calipers. They were genuinely fit for purpose against an RB26DETT that produced an officially-quoted 280hp (real-world closer to 320hp) and a 1540kg curb weight.

Twenty-five years later, the picture is completely different.

1. The factory Brembos are aging. Every R34 in Australia is now 22+ years old. The factory caliper seals have hardened, pistons are sticking on many cars, and the cast iron rotors have been replaced with whatever was available at the time. Sourcing genuine Nissan rotor replacements is now expensive and increasingly difficult. The OEM Brembo calipers can be rebuilt, but at a cost that often approaches the price of a quality BBK upgrade.

2. R34 power levels have moved on. Almost no R34 GT-R in Australia is still running factory power. Even modest tuning of an RB26DETT (boost-up tune with supporting mods) produces 350-400hp; a properly built RB26 makes 500-600hp without breaking a sweat; and a single-turbo conversion regularly produces 700-900hp. The factory cooling capacity of the OEM Brembos was sized for the original power figures — not for a modern tune that doubles or triples them.

3. R34s see harder use now than they did when new. The cars that survived to the 2020s are increasingly being driven on track, time attack, or hard road events. Factory cooling capacity that was adequate for spirited road driving in 1999 is genuinely insufficient for a track day in 2025 — particularly on Australia's longer, faster circuits where sustained heavy braking is required.

The Alcon BBK upgrade addresses all three: modern caliper construction that won't suffer the age-related seal/piston issues plaguing OEM Brembos, significantly higher thermal capacity for sustained heavy braking, and engineering specifically designed for the power and weight envelope of a built RB26.

The Alcon Advantage Extreme Kit — What's in the Box

The standard R34 Alcon BBK uses calipers from the Advantage Extreme range (typically CAR97 MONO6 front, CAR98 MONO4 rear, depending on the specific kit configuration). The kit is a complete bolt-on solution — calipers, rotors, mounting brackets, brake lines and hardware engineered specifically for the R34 chassis.

Front kit typical specifications:

  • Caliper: Alcon CAR97 MONO6 — 6-piston monobloc, gravity die cast aluminium, ZG-spec pistons (30.2 / 34.9 / 38.1mm)
  • Rotor: 343mm or 365mm × 32mm Alcon 2-piece floating, aluminium hat with iron disc
  • Brake lines: ADR-approved braided stainless steel (Goodridge or HEL)
  • Mounting: CNC-machined brackets specific to R34 hubs
  • Wheel requirement: 18-inch minimum (verify clearance against template)

Rear kit typical specifications:

  • Caliper: Alcon CAR98 MONO4 — 4-piston monobloc, matching front caliper construction
  • Rotor: 343mm or 350mm × 28mm Alcon 2-piece floating
  • Brake lines: ADR-approved braided stainless steel
  • Mounting: CNC-machined brackets
  • Wheel requirement: 18-inch minimum

Note: Alcon offers multiple rotor diameter options for the R34 platform. The right size depends on your wheel choice, intended use (street vs track), and brake bias preference. We'll spec the right combination based on your build — get in touch before ordering.

For Serious Track Use — Race Caliper Options

The Advantage Extreme kit suits most R34 owners. For dedicated track cars or serious Time Attack builds, Alcon's race caliper range opens up further options:

  • CAR89 TA6+ — Forged 6-piston street/track caliper, race-derived engineering with daily-driver usability
  • CAR49 TA4+ — Forged 4-piston rear, the daily-usable version of Alcon's motorsport rear (see our CAR49/TA4+ collection)
  • CRB343 — 4-piston radial-mount race caliper. NON DUST SEALED — track use only. Suitable for Rally, Group N+ and Touring Car applications where the car isn't street-driven

For full caliper guidance see our Alcon main collection.

Pad Compounds & Rotor Selection

Pad compound matters as much as caliper choice on the R34 platform. The factory R34 GT-R is a heavy car (~1560kg) that gets used hard — pad selection has to match.

  • Street/spirited road: DIXCEL Z-Type or M-Type compounds — strong initial bite with reasonable wear and noise characteristics for daily use
  • Street + occasional track: DIXCEL ES-Type or R-Type — higher operating temperature range, more aggressive bite under load
  • Dedicated track/Time Attack: Race-spec pads from DIXCEL, Endless, Project Mu or Pagid (we can spec the right compound for your circuit and driving style)

Replacement rotor rings (when the time comes) are available through Paragon Performance for the Alcon 2-piece rotor system — significantly cheaper than replacing the complete rotor assembly.

Build Path — Where the Brake Upgrade Fits

For most R34 owners, the Alcon BBK earns its place at one of three points in the build:

Stage 0 — Factory brake failure. If your R34's factory Brembos are showing their age (sticking pistons, hardened seals, scored rotors, soft pedal that won't bleed out), the Alcon upgrade is significantly more cost-effective than full OEM Brembo rebuilds plus rotor replacement. The modern Alcon kit will outlast the rest of the car.

Stage 1 — Tuned RB26/RB25. Once you've got 400+hp on tap with bolt-on supporting mods, the factory brakes start running out of thermal headroom on hot days and during sustained spirited driving. The Alcon BBK restores braking confidence at the new power level.

Stage 2 — Built motor / big single / E85. At this level — built RB26 with a big single turbo, 600+hp wheel power, E85 tune — the factory Brembos are unambiguously inadequate. Alcon BBK is non-negotiable, and you should also be looking at supporting cooling and fuel system upgrades.

Stage 3 — Track / Time Attack / dedicated motorsport. Move from the Advantage Extreme kit to the forged TA6+/TA4+ calipers, or the dedicated CRB343 race caliper for cars that won't see street use. Add proper race pads, motorsport brake fluid, and a brake bias controller if running adjustable bias.

Completing the R34 Build — Supporting Modifications

The Alcon BBK handles braking. For the rest of the R34 build, pair with the Chicane Australia Skyline range:

  • Cooling: KOYORAD aluminium radiator — direct-fit upgrade for the aging factory plastic-tank unit
  • Pads: DIXCEL across all street and track compounds
  • Replacement rotors: Paragon Performance for Alcon 2-piece rotor service
  • Suspension: Hardrace control arms, bushings and supporting suspension components
  • Exhaust: KORSH RB-platform exhaust components
  • Fuel system: Injector Dynamics injectors for built-motor and E85 builds
  • RB26 engine internals/management: Tomei Powered for cam, valvetrain, manifolds and motorsport-grade engine components

Sourcing & Lead Times

R34-specific Alcon kits are built to order in many cases. Lead times typically run 2-4 weeks for standard configurations and 4-6 weeks for custom-colour or bespoke piston specifications. We can hold inventory of the most-requested R34 GT-R configurations — get in touch before ordering and we'll confirm current availability and lead time.

Alcon R34 — Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Alcon BBK fit my R34 V-Spec / V-Spec II / M-Spec?
Yes. All R34 GT-R chassis variants (standard GT-R, V-Spec, V-Spec II, M-Spec, V-Spec II Nur, M-Spec Nur, V-Spec N1) use the same hub geometry and brake mounting points. The Alcon kit fits all BNR34 chassis. The Z-Tune is also compatible but worth confirming specifically given the chassis modifications on some Z-Tune builds.

Will the Alcon kit fit my R34 GT-T?
Yes — Alcon makes a dedicated R34 GT-T (ER34) kit. The GT-T uses a different rear axle to the GT-R (rear-wheel-drive vs the GT-R's AWD with rear-mounted transfer case), so the rear caliper bracket is specific to the platform. The front kit is similar to the GT-R fitment.

What wheel size do I need for the R34 Alcon kit?
Most R34 Alcon BBK kits require minimum 18-inch wheels. R34 GT-R came factory with 18-inch wheels (245/40 ZR18), so most R34 GT-R owners are already on appropriate wheel sizes. The 380mm+ rotor options typically require 18" or 19" wheels depending on wheel design and offset. Verify clearance against the Alcon fitment template before ordering — BBK kits are built to order and not returnable for wheel clearance issues.

Will the Alcon kit work with my existing master cylinder?
For street use on most tuned R34s, yes. The factory R34 master cylinder produces enough volume for the Alcon caliper piston area. For serious motorsport applications or significantly larger BBK kits, an upgraded master cylinder may be recommended — we can confirm this against your specific kit configuration.

How long is the wait for an Alcon R34 kit?
Typical lead times: 2-4 weeks for standard caliper colours and stock configurations; 4-6 weeks for custom colours, bespoke piston configurations, or non-standard pad compounds. We'll confirm current lead time before processing the order.

Should I get DBA, Project Mu or Alcon rotors with the kit?
The Alcon BBK ships with Alcon 2-piece rotors as part of the kit — these are engineered specifically to match the caliper piston area and bite characteristics. DBA, Project Mu and similar two-piece rotors are excellent products but not direct-fit to the Alcon caliper without compatible bell/hat specifications. Stick with Alcon rotors for the original kit, and source replacement rings through Paragon Performance when service replacement is needed.
