If you've started shopping for a Tomei exhaust in Australia, you've probably run into the problem. Walk into most retailer product pages and the sub-brand naming is inconsistent, the fitment is vague, and half the time the product you're looking at isn't even the original Japanese Tomei — it's Tomei USA, a separate company that hasn't been part of Tomei Japan since 2019.
This guide is different. It covers the real Tomei Japan titanium exhaust range — the products built in Machida, Tokyo by TOMEI POWERED INC. — organised by the four sub-brands Tomei Japan actually makes. EXPREME Ti, Ti RACING, Ti SPORTS and EXTRACK Ti. Each one is engineered for a different chassis, a different driver and a different set of priorities. Pick the right one and the car is transformed. Pick the wrong one and you've spent three thousand dollars on an exhaust that doesn't suit the build.
Written for Aussie WRX, STI, 86, BRZ, GR86, Skyline GT-R, Silvia, 350Z, 370Z, RZ34 and even Land Cruiser owners, with the noise and ADR realities of NSW, VIC, QLD and WA kept in mind throughout.
Tomei Japan vs Tomei USA — Read This First
Before the sub-brands, the most important piece of context: there are two companies selling exhausts under the "Tomei" name worldwide, and they're not the same business.
TOMEI POWERED INC. (Japan) is the original — founded on 19 June 1968 in Kawasaki by former Nissan works driver Seiichi Suzuki, now headquartered in Machida, Tokyo. The company was renamed TOMEI Powered in 1994 and joined the GLION Group in 2021. They launched the EXPREME exhaust line in 2003 and the ARMS turbo kits in 2002. This is the company that makes the Full-Cast RB26 manifold, the EXPREME Ti titanium muffler range, the Poncam and Procam camshafts, the Genesis crate engines. Everything the word "Tomei" originally stood for.
TOMEI POWERED USA INC. was originally Tomei Japan's North American subsidiary, established in 2006. In 2014 it was split off as a separate company, and on 28 February 2019 the licensing contract between the two companies expired. Since March 2019, Tomei USA sells its own independently-developed products — Tomei Japan has publicly disclaimed all responsibility for them and maintains a dedicated notice on their website asking customers to stop contacting them about Tomei USA items. A quick identifier: Tomei USA part numbers typically start with "T". Every genuine Tomei Japan product has a numeric SKU.
The rest of this guide covers Tomei Japan products only. Every sub-brand, every SKU, every fitment is the original Machida-built part.
Why Tomei Japan, and Why Titanium
Tomei Japan's racing credentials are the foundation of every product. The company has competed in or supported All Japan F2 (1978+), All Japan F3 (1989+, with the Nissan CA18DE engine developed in-house for Nismo), Mugen F3000 engine maintenance, D1GP, drag racing (setting a Japan record of 9.167 seconds with an R32 GT-R in 1998), and Formula Drift Japan (2015+). The Machida facility runs two hydraulic engine dynos (800HP and 600HP), a Dyno Dynamics 4WD chassis dynamometer, JTEKT computer-controlled camshaft grinding machines, 3D measuring equipment, and Rockwell hardness testing — every component is verified in-house before release.
Titanium matters for three reasons. It's roughly half the weight of equivalent stainless steel, which matters on a sports car where every kilo off the rear axle helps handling balance. It resists the kind of heat cycling that cracks welded stainless over time. And its acoustic properties produce the race-car exhaust tone that gives Tomei Japan titanium mufflers their signature character — hard-edged, mechanical, and entirely different to the dull rumble of a budget catback.
The four titanium sub-brands below all share that foundation. Where they differ is layout, sound profile, chassis application and design philosophy.
EXPREME Ti — The Core Titanium Muffler Range
EXPREME Ti is Tomei Japan's entry-point titanium line and the most widely-fitted sub-brand globally. Full titanium construction with 80mm piping throughout, single-exit layout, oversized silencer shell, clamp-band connections replacing traditional flanges for reduced weight. The signature burnt-blue gradient finish with embossed Tomei logo is instantly recognisable.
The design brief is a balanced race-bred single-exit titanium cat-back — aggressive tone, substantial weight reduction, solid flow numbers. Not as aggressive as Ti RACING, not as refined as Ti SPORTS. For most buyers, most of the time, it's the right product.
Who it's for: Subaru WRX and STI owners across the full EJ20/EJ25 generation run (GDB, GRB, GRF, GVB, GVF, VAB). Mitsubishi Evo VII-IX and Evo X owners. Nissan Silvia S13 (PS13/RPS13) and S14 owners. Levorg and Forester XT owners. Anyone wanting the Tomei Japan titanium experience without paying the Ti RACING premium.
The TYPE-80 specifically: The EXPREME Ti range also includes the "TYPE-80" — a specific model for the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ (ZN6/ZC6) FA20 chassis. The TYPE-80 was engineered with a sub-muffler layout specifically designed to smooth the FA20 mid-range flat spot between 3,500 and 4,500 RPM. Purpose-built for the boxer, and the benchmark Tomei Japan product for ZN6/ZC6 owners who drive the car regularly.
Who it's not for: Skyline GT-R, 350Z, 370Z, RZ34, R35 or 4WD owners — EXPREME Ti doesn't cover those chassis. Those platforms have their own Tomei sub-brands (see below).
Ti RACING — The Race-Spec Titanium Line
Ti RACING is Tomei Japan's competition-spec titanium muffler line, developed specifically for the modern performance chassis and the race circuits they live on. Straighter pipe layouts than EXPREME Ti, larger exit diameters on newer chassis, race-tuned sub-muffler geometry. The loudest and most aggressive sound character in the Tomei Japan range.
The philosophy is different from EXPREME Ti. Where EXPREME Ti is a balanced race-bred street/track cat-back, Ti RACING is built for track use first and concedes nothing to daily liveability. Flow numbers, weight reduction, tone aggression — Ti RACING sits at the top of every measurement.
Who it's for: Skyline GT-R owners (BNR32, BCNR33, BNR34) wanting race-spec flow. 350Z (Z33) and 370Z (Z34) owners chasing the race-car V6 tone. RZ34 / 400Z owners wanting Tomei's latest for the VR30DDTT platform. R35 GT-R owners paying premium money for premium product. 86/BRZ/GR86 owners (ZN6, ZC6, ZN8, ZD8) who prefer Ti RACING's straight-through character over the TYPE-80's mid-range-smoothing layout. Track cars, weekend cars, built drift cars.
Who it's not for: Daily-driven cars where you're accountable to neighbours, body corporates or state EPA inspectors. Ti RACING is the hardest-edged tone Tomei Japan makes, and it doesn't apologise.
Ti RACING also covers the front pipe and mid Y-pipe: The Ti RACING range isn't just mufflers. Tomei Japan produces a Ti RACING Titanium Front Pipe for the RB26 GT-R chassis (fits BNR32/BCNR33/BNR34) and a Ti RACING Titanium Mid Y-Pipe for the Z33 and Z34 that cross-fits both chassis. These complete the titanium exhaust system from turbo-back (GT-R) or Y-pipe-back (Z).
Ti SPORTS — The Street-Friendly JASMA Line
Ti SPORTS is Tomei Japan's JASMA-certified street titanium line. JASMA is the Japanese aftermarket exhaust noise and emissions standard — meaningfully tighter than most buyers realise — and Ti SPORTS products were designed from the ground up to pass it. That certification dictated the engineering: an optimised high-flow internal structure paired with a balanced oval sub-muffler specific to each chassis, delivering titanium weight savings with a refined tone instead of race-car aggression.
Full titanium construction, same Machida manufacturing as the Expreme and Ti Racing ranges, same weight advantages. The trade-off is sound character — Ti SPORTS doesn't have the hard race-car edge of Ti RACING. It sounds good, but it sounds like a refined performance exhaust rather than a weapon. For a lot of GT-R and 86/BRZ owners who drive their cars every day, that's exactly the right compromise.
Who it's for: Nissan Skyline GT-R owners (BNR32, BCNR33, BNR34) who daily-drive the car and don't want state EPA attention every time they accelerate. 2022+ GR86 (ZN8) and BRZ (ZD8) owners who want titanium weight savings without the race-spec volume. Anyone whose exhaust choice is constrained by NSW, VIC, QLD or WA noise regulations.
Who it's not for: Track cars, drift builds or anyone chasing the aggressive Tomei signature sound. If you want the Tomei race tone, Ti SPORTS isn't the product — Ti RACING or EXPREME Ti is.
EXTRACK Ti — Titanium for 4WD & SUV
The newest member of the Tomei Japan titanium family. EXTRACK Ti applies the same Machida-built titanium construction to the 4WD and SUV market — packaged for serious overland and off-road builds rather than track cars. Same titanium muffler quality, different application.
Currently available for the Toyota Land Cruiser 250 (GDJ250W). It's a genuine race-derived titanium exhaust for a segment that hasn't had proper Japanese titanium options before — and for Australian buyers in the overland and 4WD performance scene, it's a rare opportunity to put a Tomei Japan muffler on a platform that wouldn't normally get one.
Who it's for: Toyota Land Cruiser 250 owners who want weight reduction and Tomei Japan build quality on a 4WD platform.
Who it's not for: Anyone with a road car — EXTRACK Ti is specific to the 4WD/SUV range.
How to Pick the Right Tomei Japan Sub-Brand for Your Car
The decision tree comes down to four questions.
Question 1 — What chassis do you have?
Some sub-brands are chassis-specific. Ti SPORTS is only available for the R32/R33/R34 GT-R and the 2022+ ZN8/ZD8 GR86/BRZ. EXTRACK Ti is Land Cruiser 250 only. Ti RACING covers GT-R (R32/R33/R34/R35), Z33/Z34/RZ34 and 86/BRZ/GR86. EXPREME Ti covers WRX/STI, Evo, S13/S14 Silvia, 180SX, Levorg and Forester — plus the TYPE-80 for ZN6/ZC6 86/BRZ.
Question 2 — How do you drive the car?
Weekend car, track-only or dedicated drift build where you can tolerate the volume: Ti RACING (if available for your chassis) or EXPREME Ti. The aggression is part of the purchase.
Daily driver where you'd prefer to keep the neighbours and state EPA happy: Ti SPORTS if available, EXPREME Ti if not. Titanium benefits, liveable volume.
Question 3 — What's the rest of the build?
Running upgraded turbos and chasing 500+ HP on an RB26, EJ25 or SR20DET? You want maximum flow — Ti RACING or EXPREME Ti wins over Ti SPORTS. Ti SPORTS is designed around factory-power characteristics and can become a restriction on big-power builds.
Stock or mildly modified street car? Ti SPORTS flow numbers are more than adequate and the refined tone suits the build better.
Question 4 — What's your budget?
Tomei Japan pricing scales with sub-brand positioning. EXPREME Ti sits at the entry point (most SKUs around $2,300 AUD). Ti RACING mid-range for RB26 and Z-car ($2,400–$3,950). Ti SPORTS premium for GT-R and ZN8/ZD8 ($3,170–$4,299). R35 Ti RACING is the premium product at $7,599. RZ34 Ti RACING at $6,919. Every price point reflects the chassis-specific engineering and the raw materials.
Tomei Japan Manifolds — The Other Half of the System
Worth covering before closing: Tomei Japan's stainless and full-cast exhaust manifold range is as respected as the titanium muffler line. Three categories:
Full-Cast Manifolds — the Full-Cast RB26 Manifold for BNR32/BCNR33/BNR34 is a motorsport benchmark. Cast stainless for thermal stability, optimised runner geometry, built for the thermal cycling of big-power RB26 turbo setups. There isn't a better manifold for a built GT-R engine.
EXPREME Stainless Manifolds — for Subaru WRX/STI (Equal-Length, Unequal-Length, and Twin Scroll variants), Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ ZN6/ZC6 (Equal-Length and Unequal-Length), Mitsubishi Evo IV-IX, and Nissan 350Z Z33. Each layout delivers different power and sound characteristics — equal-length smooths the top end and removes the characteristic Subaru "burble", unequal-length preserves it.
Full-Cast Turbo Outlet Pipes — cast stainless outlets for RB26 GT-R, RB25DET/RB20DET R-chassis and Stagea, and SR20DET Silvia/180SX (with and without EAI). Cast thermal stability is a genuine advantage over welded stainless under sustained boost.
Combining a Tomei Japan manifold with a Tomei Japan muffler gives you a complete Machida-engineered exhaust system with matched flow characteristics end-to-end.
What About Road Legality in Australia?
This is the part every retailer glosses over. Tomei Japan's Ti RACING and EXPREME Ti mufflers are race-derived and aren't guaranteed to meet Australian noise regulations in every state. Ti SPORTS was originally JASMA-certified in Japan, which makes it the most street-friendly option in the range, but it's still not automatically ADR-compliant in Australia. The EXPREME Ti Titanium Cat Straight Pipes (decat sections) are race use only.
Australian noise limits vary by state and by vehicle age. NSW enforces 90dB stationary on most modern passenger cars. VIC, QLD and WA have their own rules and their own inspection protocols. Vehicle age matters — older cars are subject to looser standards in some states, and import-history vehicles have their own complications.
The safe approach on any Tomei Japan purchase is to check your state's current rules, ask your local inspection station what their reading protocol is, and get in touch with us before ordering if compliance is a priority. We can recommend the right Tomei Japan sub-brand for your state and your build rather than leaving you with an exhaust that can't be driven on the road.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Tomei EXPREME Ti and Ti RACING?
EXPREME Ti is Tomei Japan's core titanium muffler line — a balanced race-bred single-exit 80mm titanium cat-back with aggressive tone and substantial weight reduction. Ti RACING is the race-spec line with straighter pipe layouts, larger exit diameters on modern chassis, and the most aggressive sound in the Tomei range. Ti RACING covers GT-R (R32-R34 and R35), Z33/Z34/RZ34, and 86/BRZ/GR86. EXPREME Ti covers WRX/STI, Evo, S13/S14 Silvia, 180SX and the 86/BRZ TYPE-80.
