KOYORAD

KOYORAD is one of the oldest and most respected names in performance cooling — established in Nagoya, Japan in 1956 and trusted by the JDM tuning world for nearly seven decades. Every KOYORAD aluminium racing radiator is designed and engineered at KOYORAD's head office in Nagoya, Japan, and produced in KOYORAD's own ISO 9001 certified manufacturing facility in Indonesia under Japanese engineering oversight. End tanks are hand TIG-welded, aluminium cores are Nocolok-brazed, and every product is built to KOYORAD's "Japanese workmanship standard" program — the result is OE-grade fitment precision at competitive pricing. Chicane Australia stocks the full KOYORAD performance range for Japanese, European and Australian-delivered vehicles — direct-fit cooling upgrades for everything from the Skyline RB engines to the latest G16E-GTS GR Yaris.

KOYORAD — Built by the Brand That Started in 1956

KOYORAD began life in 1956 as Ejiri Radiator in Nagoya, Japan, becoming Koyo Radiator Manufacturing in 1959 and ultimately Koyorad. Their first dedicated radiator and oil cooler factory opened in 1968, and over nearly seventy years they've grown into one of the dominant names in OE-replacement and performance cooling worldwide — supplying everything from factory replacement units for Toyota and Lexus through to racing radiators used by professional motorsport teams.

KOYORAD's head office and R&D operations remain in Nagoya, Japan, where every product is designed, tested and engineered before being released to production. Production of KOYORAD's all-aluminium racing radiators (R-Series, V-Core, Hyper V-Core and N-Flo lines) happens in PT. KOYORAD Jaya Indonesia — KOYORAD's wholly-owned ISO 9001 certified facility in Cikarang Barat, established in 1994 and now employing approximately 1,200 staff. The Indonesian facility operates under Japanese management and engineering oversight, with workers trained through KOYORAD's "Japanese workmanship standard" program — typically three to twelve months of training in Japanese manufacturing methods before joining the production line.

The result is a genuinely unique manufacturing story: Japanese-engineered, Japanese-supervised, Japanese-quality production at competitive global pricing. It's not the same as "made in Japan" — and KOYORAD is honest about that — but it's also not the same as the design-in-USA/build-in-Asia model most competitors use. Every KOYORAD racing radiator is built in a facility KOYORAD owns, by workers trained to KOYORAD's Japanese standards, under the engineering oversight of the same Nagoya team that designed the product. For Australian JDM platform owners — Skyline, Silvia, Supra, RX-7, S2000, 86/BRZ, WRX/STI, GR Yaris — that level of engineering and manufacturing integration is why KOYORAD has remained the benchmark for cooling for decades.

Understanding the KOYORAD Range — Which Series Suits Your Build?

KOYORAD's performance line is organised around core construction and intended use. Picking the right series depends on your engine, your driving style, and how much factory engine bay space you have to work with.

R-Series — Entry Performance: All-aluminium construction with factory-position fitment and meaningful capacity gains over OEM. The entry point into the KOYORAD performance line and ideal for street builds and mild track use. R-Series radiators give you the durability of all-aluminium construction and the reliability of OE-spec fitment without stepping up to the premium tiers.

V-Core Series (36mm) — Daily + Circuit: 36mm thick all-aluminium core engineered for vehicles where engine bay packaging limits core thickness. Suitable for both daily driving and circuit work, V-Core sits at the sweet spot of KOYORAD's range and is the most commonly chosen series for moderately-modified street/track cars.

Hyper V-Core — Premium Performance: The flagship KOYORAD performance line. Features a specially-designed fin and tube pitch that significantly increases surface area while maintaining excellent air circulation through the core. Hyper V-Core was developed specifically for modern vehicles with limited engine bay space and demanding cooling requirements. If you're chasing maximum cooling performance in a factory-position radiator, this is the series to look at.

HH Series — High Fin Density: 48mm thick core with ultra-dense fin layout, hand-assembled and TIG-welded for serious cooling demands. Found on applications like the R32 Skyline GT-R where the engine bay can accommodate a thicker core. The HH Series delivers maximum heat dissipation for hard-driven cars and pure motorsport use.

N-Flo Technology — Dual-Pass Coolant Routing: KOYORAD's proprietary internal partition technology, available across multiple series. Standard radiators allow coolant to flow diagonally through the core — N-Flo radiators use an N-shaped internal partition to force the coolant through the radiator for longer, ensuring uniform cooling across the entire core surface. The result is up to 50% better cooling efficiency than the OEM unit. Look for N-Flo on applications where the factory inlet/outlet configuration allows the additional internal routing.

KOYORAD vs the Competition — Why JDM Origin Matters

The performance radiator market in Australia is crowded with options — Mishimoto, CSF, PWR, and KOYORAD all compete for the same builds. Each brand has genuine strengths, and we stock alternatives so we can spec the right radiator for any given application. Here's the honest take on where KOYORAD wins.

KOYORAD's strengths: Japanese engineering and design with Japanese-supervised manufacturing in KOYORAD's own ISO 9001 certified facility, almost 70 years of OE-replacement engineering experience, hand TIG-welded end tanks for maximum strength and longevity, and OEM-style fitment precision that's hard to match. For JDM platforms in particular — Skyline, Supra, Silvia, RX-7, S2000, 86/BRZ — KOYORAD's fitment and finish quality is the benchmark other brands aim at.

Where you might pick alternatives: US brands sometimes get to market first on newer chassis (Mishimoto and CSF beat KOYORAD to several recent platforms), and some buyers prefer the lifetime warranty marketing some US brands lead with. If you need cooling for a specific newer platform KOYORAD hasn't released for yet, get in touch — we'll spec the right alternative.

For everything KOYORAD covers, the answer is straightforward: you're buying a radiator designed and engineered in Japan by the company that's been doing this since before most performance brands existed — built in a manufacturing facility KOYORAD owns and supervises directly.

Installation — Why "Plug-and-Play" Actually Means Something

KOYORAD's marketing repeats the phrase "plug-and-play" relentlessly, and on most performance radiator brands that claim deserves scrutiny. With KOYORAD it's genuinely accurate. Their engineering team designs every radiator around the factory mounting points, fan shroud bolt pattern, OEM hose locations, and (where applicable) the factory sensor bungs. The result is an install that takes the same amount of time as a factory radiator replacement.

What that means in practice: no cutting the fan shroud (a regular issue on some competing brands), no bracket relocation, no custom plumbing, no stretching hoses across mismatched outlets. Where a competing radiator might require a Dremel for the fan shroud clearance, the KOYORAD bolts in.

The exception worth flagging: some KOYORAD Hyper V-Core radiators with thicker cores (above 36mm) may require trimming the upper or lower radiator hose to accommodate the increased thickness. This is noted on individual product pages where relevant — the trimming is minor and far less invasive than the modifications other thick-core radiators sometimes demand.

When Should You Upgrade Your Radiator?

Three scenarios where a KOYORAD upgrade pays for itself:

The factory radiator is showing its age. OEM radiators with plastic end tanks are a service item — the tanks become brittle from thermal cycling and crack at the seam after 10-15 years. Almost every JDM hero car from the 90s and 2000s is in this category now. Replacing a tired factory radiator with an OEM-spec replacement is throwing money at a part that will fail again. Replacing it with a KOYORAD all-aluminium unit is a permanent solution.

You've added power. Factory cooling is sized for factory power. Add a turbo upgrade, a tune, more boost, or change your driving from commuting to circuit — and the factory radiator runs out of thermal headroom. KOYORAD upgrades typically give you 30-50% more cooling capacity, restoring proper headroom for tuned cars.

You drive in heat or on track. The Australian climate is unkind to factory cooling systems, especially on JDM cars designed for milder Japanese summers. Track days compound the problem. If your factory temp gauge climbs steadily through a session or sits near the top in summer traffic, the cooling system has run out of margin.
